Professor Anton Sculean, a leading figure in periodontology and former president of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), has received one of Romania’s highest distinctions.
At a ceremony held in the State Hall of Peleș Castle, Her Majesty the Custodian of the Crown awarded Prof Sculean the Order of the Crown of Romania, in the rank of Officer. The honour was among several distinctions conferred in recognition of outstanding contributions to society.
Prof Sculean, current secretary general of the EFP and EFP president from 2018 to 2019, is professor and chair of the Department of Periodontology and head of research at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern (Switzerland). He is also editor-in-chief of Periodontology 2000, the highest ranked journal in dentistry.

A key figure in international periodontology, he served as scientific chair of Perio Master Clinic 2020 and currently chairs the organising committee for EuroPerio11, the world’s leading congress in periodontology and implant dentistry, taking place in Vienna in May 2025.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this prestigious distinction from Her Majesty the Custodian of the Crown of Romania,” expressed Sculean. “It is a humbling recognition that reflects not only my personal journey, but also the importance of advancing periodontal and oral health science and education at an international level. I share this award with all my colleagues and mentors who have inspired and supported me throughout my career.”
