The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has launched a special campaign to mark the 50th anniversary of its flagship publication, the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (JCP). First published in 1974, the JCP has become a cornerstone of periodontology and implant dentistry, recognised globally for its rigorous scientific content and significant impact on the field.

The campaign not only celebrates the journal’s scientific achievements but also spotlights the human stories behind its success. From the editors and contributors to the groundbreaking research it has published, the initiative will explore the personal narratives and dedication that have shaped the JCP over the decades.

As part of the celebrations, the EFP will release six special podcasts dedicated to the journal. These episodes will explore various aspects of the JCP’s history, influence, and future. The series kicks off with an exclusive interview with Professor Jan Lindhe, who served as the journal’s editor-in-chief for nearly 30 years. Prof. Lindhe is a towering figure in dental research. A professor emeritus at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, he is renowned for his pioneering studies, numerous accolades, and editorial leadership. His tenure as JCP editor (1976–2004) set the foundation for the journal’s reputation for scientific rigour and clinical relevance.

The JCP, under the editorial leadership of Professor Panos Papapanou since 2021, continues to publish high-impact research in periodontology and implant dentistry and remains among the journals with the highest impact factor (currently 5.8). This legacy of excellence reflects the vision and hard work of its editors and contributors, beginning with founding editor Hans Rudolf Mühlemann (1974–1976), through Prof. Lindhe, and later Professor Maurizio Tonetti (2005–2021).

EFP president Moritz Kebschull highlights the journal’s role as a beacon of scientific integrity and progress for the dental profession:  "The Journal of Clinical Periodontology is more than a journal; it is a testament to the strength of our scientific community and its unwavering commitment to advancing periodontology. Over the past five decades, the JCP has become a trusted platform for groundbreaking research, a symbol of excellence, and a bridge connecting researchers and clinicians worldwide. As we celebrate this milestone, we honour the human stories behind the science - those who have shaped the journal and those whose work it has elevated. Together, we will continue to uphold the JCP’s legacy of credibility, integrity, and innovation.”

The EFP invites researchers, clinicians, and all oral health professionals to join the celebration of the JCP’s 50th anniversary. Follow the campaign through the EFP’s digital platforms, tune into the special podcast series, and discover the untold stories behind one of the most respected journals in dental medicine.
