The EFP general assembly (GA) was held on 29 March 2025 in Birmingham, UK with all 43 member societies represented. Participants gathered to review the past term and plan for the year ahead. The Moroccan and Peruvian societies of periodontology were welcomed as new international associate members of the EFP.
Professor Nicola West, departing EFP secretary general, and EFP President, Professor Moritz Kebschull, introduced the new EFP strategic plan for 2026-2030 entitled Vision 2030: Better oral health for all. Prof West explained: “Many stakeholders collaborated on the new strategic plan. As I end my term as EFP secretary general, I am delighted to present this vision that reaffirms the EFP’s commitment to scientific excellence, high-quality education, policy influence, and sustainable organisational growth. Building on our past progress, the new roadmap aims to establish periodontal health as a cornerstone of global healthcare, ensuring better oral health for all.”
Prof Kebschull added: ““In the coming years, we will continue to improve organisational structures to meet the demands of a larger, more influential federation. The EFP will also develop mechanisms to involve the next generation of professionals. Their engagement is key to the future of the federation and the periodontal profession. Reports about the work undertaken and aims achieved over the past year were presented to the general assembly by EFP president Moritz Kebschull, who completes his mandate at this GA, and by outgoing secretary general Nicola West and outgoing treasurer Monique Danser, both stepping down after completing two terms. Reports were also delivered by all current committee chairs.
Kebschull said: "It has been an honour to serve as EFP president and to witness all the great work achieved by our committees over the past year. I am grateful to everyone who has contributed to our shared success and, with the new strategic plan in place and EuroPerio11 in a couple of months, there is so much to look forward to! Thank you all for your dedication to advancing periodontology and periodontal health."
“It has been a privilege to serve as EFP treasurer and to contribute to securing the federation’s financial stability,” noted Danser. “I want to thank our partners and sponsors, whose continued support makes our projects and campaigns possible, and all those who have worked with dedication to ensure a strong and sustainable EFP. "
Every year the EFP honours periodontal professionals who have contributed significantly to the EFP and European periodontology. This year, the EFP Distinguished Scientist Award goes to Senior Professor Thomas Kocher from University Greifswald, in Germany. Kocher has published extensively, lectures at many international events and has been part of the development of EFP consensus reports and guidelines, as well as the Classification of periodontal diseases.
“As the General Assembly concludes, we all look ahead to EuroPerio11 in Vienna, which promises to be a truly unique event,” pointed out Kebschull. “Beyond that, Perio Master Clinic2026 in Baku and the International Perio Master Clinic 2027 in Rio de Janeiro will offer further opportunities to meet, exchange knowledge, and continue advancing periodontal science and patient care.”
The next General Assembly will be held in Athens, on 21 March 2026.
