Gum Health Day 2019: Georgia – outdoor event involving many clinics

The Georgian Association of Periodontology organised an outdoors dental festival to celebrate Gum Health Day.

At Lisi Lake in the capital Tbilisi, the society held an event with activities to boost public awareness of gum health and provide instructions in correct oral hygiene. The event was attended by around 1,800 people.

Dentists from 15 clinics were involved in the action, and activities included games, explaining the virtues of apples versus sweets, “how to have fun at the dental check-up”, and providing information about the links between oral health and general health.

The society also carried out a survey which showed that only 15% of people knew that periodontists treat gums, while 30% were aware that they were dentists but did not know the specific area of responsibility, and 55% had no idea what a periodontist is.

The Georgian Association of Periodontology joined the EFP as an associate member at the federation’s general assembly in Bern (Switzerland) on March 30 this year.
