Categories:Events, National Activities
The Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration (SEPA) organised the prestigious Sepa 2024 Bilbao, their congress on periodontics and oral health - from 29 May to 1 June 2024 in Euskalduna, Bilbao. This landmark event held under the motto: "Clinical excellence based on scientific evidence," brought together over 4,500 participants from 48 countries, emphasising innovation in periodontics and implant therapy.
The congress featured more than 200 speakers and 70 participating companies, hosting sessions in 28 simultaneous rooms. Attendees had the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills in the prevention and management of periodontal diseases and implant therapy, guided by the latest scientific evidence.
Dr José Nart, president of SEPA, highlighted the event's commitment to clinical applicability and the participation of world-renowned experts: “Sepa 2024 was a great success. We were delighted to have so many leading international and Spanish experts, including David Herrera, Giovanni Zucchelli, Luca de Stavola, and Iain Chapple, who presented the latest trends and advances in periodontics. Participants also came from far away, especially from Latin America and Japan. Together, we celebrated SEPA’s 65th anniversary.”
The congress stood out for its practical, dynamic, and interactive sessions. It focused on advanced implantology, the relationship between periodontics and general health, patient-centric treatment, and cutting-edge management practices in the SEPA Management track. The concrete and hands-on nature of Sepa 2024 sessions, addressing current clinical dilemmas, was appreciated by delegates.
The programme was structured into three main itineraries: interdisciplinary, digital, and periodontics for dentists; a specialised hygiene track; and a management track. ExpoPerio provided extensive training and exhibitor opportunities. Participants were sure to find answers to their questions and information on their areas of interest.
Attendees explored interdisciplinary treatments, digitalisation, and dental clinic management, with a strong emphasis on periodontal health as the foundation for all dental treatments. The importance of collaboration across dental disciplines to meet individual patient needs effectively was underscored repeatedly.
The programme also included discussions on new technologies, artificial intelligence in periodontitis diagnosis, and digital tools in interdisciplinary treatments. Advances and challenges in implant therapy, particularly in high-risk situations and post-explantation scenarios, were thoroughly examined.
One of the highlights of the event was a live surgery session conducted from Padua, Italy, by Dr Luca de Stavola, a global expert in bone block and sheet management in periodontics. This session featured a computer-guided technique for advanced bone defects and engaged attendees in real-time via WhatsApp.
Sepa 2024 also unveiled initial results from the Promosalud programme, which involves nearly 1,500 dental clinics in early detection of diabetes and hypertension. Joint sessions with the American Academy of Periodontology, International Team for Implantology, Ibero-Pan American Federation of Periodontics, and the Oral Reconstruction Foundation enriched the event's international dimension.
Sepa 2024 addressed the significant health impact of gum diseases and peri-implantitis, affecting a substantial portion of the Spanish population. The connection between periodontal health and systemic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases was a key focus.
Next year’s congress, Sepa 2025 will take place from 26 to 29 November 2025 in Barcelona.
