Perio Workshop
Perio Workshop, organised annually by the EFP, is a world-leading scientific meeting bringing together top experts in periodontal science to reach new consensus on emerging topics
Overview
The 20th European Workshop on Periodontology entitled Periodontal diagnosis: contemporary and emerging technologies, takes place from 10 to 13 November 2024, in La Granja de San Ildefonso, Spain. The in-person workshop, organised by the European Workshop Committee and supported by the EFP with Kenvue sponsorship, gathered more than 70 participants from 21 countries across Europe, Asia, North America, and South America.
This international gathering, which included one third of female participants, explored the latest in periodontal diagnosis under the guidance of workshop chair Professor David Herrera.
The workshop was organised into three working groups (WGs), each tackling distinct aspects of periodontal diagnosis.
Working group 1 (WG1) examined traditional diagnostic methodologies, focusing on clinical assessment methods and the use of ionizing and non-ionizing imaging techniques to refine diagnostic precision. In addition, the performance of the 2018 classification has been assessed.
Working group 2 (WG2) explored biomarkers for diagnosis and risk assessment, evaluating microbial, host, and genetic markers. The findings from WG2 could be significant for tailoring diagnosis and understanding individual risk profiles in periodontal health and disease, and could also have a significant impact when designing treatment plans.
Working group 3 (WG3) studied emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, predictive algorithms, and digital tools applicable in both dental and non-dental settings. These technologies promise to improve predictive capacities and facilitate more proactive approaches to periodontal care.
Perio Workshop is an annual scientific meeting of first-level experts in periodontal science, aimed at encouraging the exchange and examination of research-based knowledge through discussion and consensus on issues of major relevance to periodontology and dentistry.
The outcomes of each edition of Perio Workshop (also known as European Workshop on Periodontology) are published in special open-access monographic supplements of the JCP (or Journal of Clinical Periodontology). The conclusions of Perio Workshop 2023 will be published by the end of 2024.
Held since 1993, Perio Workshop was first chaired by Niklaus Lang until 2008, then by Mariano Sanz from 2009 to 2020, and now by David Herrera since 2021. From 1993 to 2008 the workshops were held in Ittingen, Switzerland. Since 2009, they are held in La Granja de San Ildefonso, Spain. The editions of 2012 and 2017 were jointly organised by the EFP and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). The edition scheduled for 2020 was postponed one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
