Eleven highlights of the eleventh EuroPerio
29 January 2025
The scientific programme of EuroPerio 11 is carefully curated to address pivotal topics in periodontology and implant dentistry, blending cutting-edge research with practical applications. Scientific chair Lior Shapira highlights eleven sessions of particular interest which cover a range of topics and techniques.
1. The three live surgeries – one every morning – will present cutting-edge surgical protocols with master clinicians: periodontal regeneration, soft tissue for implants, and digital bone regeneration. For the first time at EuroPerio there will be female surgeons performing live.
- Live surgery 1: Martina Stefanini. Connective tissue graft wall technique for periodontal regeneration. (Thursday 15 May, 09.00-12.00).
- Live surgery 2: Giles de Quincey. How can digital technology assist bone regeneration? (Friday 16 May, 08.30-12.00).
- Live surgery 3: Sofia Aroca. Surgical treatment of peri-implant soft-tissue defect. (Saturday 17 May, 08.30-11.15).
2. Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing dentistry, from predictive analytics to personalized treatment planning. The AI in periodontal and implant therapy session (Thursday 15 May, 16.30-18.00) will offer insights into how these technologies can enhance patient outcomes.
3. The two Navigating clinical crises sessions feature master clinicians in implant and mucogingival surgery exploring surgical complications and the ways to solve them. Topics addressed include understanding human behaviour in crisis situations, intraoperative errors, and treatment options after failures.
- Navigating clinical crisis – bone regeneration and implant therapy (Thursday 16 May, 14.30-16.00).
- Navigating clinical crisis – mucogingival therapy (Friday 17 May, 14.30-16.00).
4. The symposium Patient involvement to enhance periodontal care: the patient's view (Thursday 16 May, 14.30-16.00), which features the world premieres of two short films about the impact of periodontitis and dental implants on patients and includes a panel discussion with patients about their experiences and how clinicians can learn from them.
5. The dedicated session The 2018 classification of periodontal diseases – what have we learned? (Wednesday 14 May, 13.30-15.00) will provide a crucial opportunity to assess the global adoption and impact of the 2018 classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. By examining successes, challenges, and areas for improvement, we can refine clinical approaches.
6. The joint session with the European Dental Hygienists Federation, How can we improve patient care in 2025? (Wednesday 14 May, 15:15-16:45), which emphasizes the need for collaboration between the two professions.
7. The special session Women’s Oral Health – Time to Explore (Thursday 15 May, 16.30-18.00), in which female speakers present specific oral-health issues related to their gender, including those concerning pregnancy and the menopause.
8. Pushing the limits in regeneration (Wednesday 14 May, 15:15-16:45), a joint session with the Osteology Foundation, the biggest global organization focusing on tissue regeneration, with top-notch speakers from both the EFP and the Osteology Foundation.
9. Bottoms up! What can we learn from gut microbiome research to benefit periodontitis patients? (Thursday 15 May, 10.30-12.00),a joint session with the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) on the gut-gum relationship. This collaboration with the AAP also symbolizes the global nature of EuroPerio11.
10. The joint session with the International Academy of Periodontology (IAP), Personalized medicine - can we personalize periodontal treatment?(Friday 16 May, 10.30-12.00), in which top speakers address hot topics such as the personalization of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory periodontal therapy and the personalized secondary prevention of periodontitis. The IAP is an important global organization, especially relevant in developing countries.
11. The International member’s forum (Thursday 15 May, 14.30-16.00), dedicated to the EFP’s international associate members with their own speakers. This session will discuss important topics for periodontal daily practice, from microscopic techniques to the use of artificial intelligence in periodontology and implantology.
