EuroPerio has been held in Vienna before: in 2012, when EuroPerio7 attracted a then-record number of 7,800 participants. This was the first time that the triennial congress was organised by Mondial Congress & Events, which since become the EFP’s trusted professional congress organizer. In the intervening 13 years, both the EFP and EuroPerio have changed considerably. EuroPerio11 chair Anton Sculean and scientific chair Lior Shapira reflect on the evolution of the congress and the federation.

Lior Shapira: Since EuroPerio 7 in Vienna in 2012, both the congress and the field of periodontology have undergone remarkable transformations, reflecting growth, innovation, and a strengthened global impact. The EFP has solidified its position as a leading voice in periodontology, expanding its influence beyond Europe to include international collaborations and partnerships.
We have created evidence-based treatment guidelines for periodontitis and peri-implantitis, elevating standards of care worldwide. The research for these guidelines has deepened our understanding of inflammation, microbiology, and tissue regeneration, and has led to more effective treatments.
Innovations such as 3D printing, guided surgery, and digital workflows have revolutionized diagnostics and treatment planning. EuroPerio 11 in Vienna will reflect these advancements, offering a state-of-the-art programme that highlights how far the congress, the EFP, and periodontology have come since 2012, while charting an exciting path forward.
'EuroPerio7 was a turning point'
Anton Sculean: EuroPerio7 was a turning point, and we have tremendously increased the quality of the sessions and the global outreach of the event. And, of course, if you look at the quality of the programme, we now have live surgeries, which we didn’t have at that time. We have more interactive sessions, and we have more common sessions with other organizations.
Lior: Within the EFP, the leadership has changed, and we are more focused every year on the workshop, with consensus reports on different subjects, on guidelines for therapy that are now accepted all over the world. Through the 2018 classification, the EFP has changed the profession of periodontology and implant dentistry. So, in the light of all this, the Congress in 2025 will accordingly be very different from the one in 2012.
Anton: We also no longer have those big books with the printed programme. They have disappeared. And I think it is important to point out that EuroPerio is now more environmentally friendly.
Another change is the importance of the communications committee, which is basically the voice of the EFP, and this is extremely important, as it makes the EFP visible. You can have the best product, but if people don't hear about that product, nobody will know about it. So, I think that this is also a very important aspect.
Both EuroPerio and the EFP are more professional. And the information reach to the public – on all channels, not only email but also Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and so on – has become much more important, and we have a professional team dealing with these aspects.
