Innovation, excellence, and collaboration - the three keys to EuroPerio11
20 January 2025
EuroPerio11 takes place in Vienna in May and the organizing committee looks forward to record numbers of participants, attracted by a programme that combines innovation, excellence, and an increasingly global reach. EuroPerio11 chair Anton Sculean, scientific chair Lior Shapira, and treasurer Elena Figuero outline their vision.
Anton Sculean: This is the largest and most important meeting in 2025 in the field of periodontology and implant dentistry and the meeting will encompass the whole world.
Lior Shapira: My vision for EuroPerio11 is to make it the most comprehensive and engaging event in periodontology and implant dentistry, fostering the exchange of knowledge, innovation, and collaboration among professionals worldwide. We aim to provide an unparalleled platform for scientific discovery, clinical advances, and networking opportunities.
In three words, EuroPerio11 will be innovation, excellence, and collaboration.
Shapira: The scientific programme of EuroPerio 11 is carefully curated to address pivotal topics in periodontology and implant dentistry, blending cutting-edge research with practical applications. EuroPerio 11 will stand out as the most dynamic and cutting-edge edition yet. We are introducing several innovations to the scientific programme to ensure it reflects the latest advances in periodontology and implant dentistry while addressing the diverse needs of our global audience.
We will have three live surgeries, with top-notch surgeons (two female and one male) streamed from Sigmund Freud University, which is just 600 metres from the congress venue. They will show the most advanced surgical techniques that have been developed recently.
Sculean: Lior has selected excellent surgeons, with the idea of creating a space for new talents. There will be a live surgery every day, and the surgeons will not be competing with each other—like at EuroPerio10 where there were live surgeries running in parallel about the same topic but using different techniques. In Vienna we will have surgeries that encompass not only periodontology but also bone augmentation, implants, and soft-tissue management at implants.
One very innovative aspect is that the live surgeries are going to take place in the Sigmund Freud University rather than each surgeon in his own office – and the surgeons will come over to the congress afterwards to discuss their surgeries.
Shapira: We are also focusing on emerging topics: digital dentistry, artificial intelligence, woman’s oral health, and the patients’ view of treatment. And there will be sessions dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach: systemic-health links, aesthetics, and patient-centred care to reflect the broader impact of periodontology and implant dentistry. Four sessions will run in parallel, so everyone will be able to tailor their own pathway.
Sculean: We also have specific sessions focused on research where we provide a platform for presenting novel cutting-edge data—and this is something that makes this event unique because it combines clinical relevance with the research component.
Novel data will be presented at a very high level that, I would say, is comparable to IADR sessions. The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) is the largest organization for research in both basic and clinical research in the entire field of dentistry. So, reaching that level is a tough goal, but we are well on the way. And these sessions will put forward novel data on prevention in all fields of periodontology and implant dentistry, I think that's very important.
The programme contains something for everybody, even more than the previous editions, because we have a lot of collaborations with different associations: the American Academy of Periodontology, the the International Academy of Periodontology, the European Dental Hygienist Federation, and the Osteology Foundation.
So, we offer something for the clinician, for the dental hygienist, and for the general dentist with an interest in periodontology and implant dentistry.
Building on the legacy
Each EuroPerio congress builds on the success of its predecessors. In terms of attendance, the peak of just over 10,000 was reached at EuroPerio9 in Amsterdam in 2018. EuroPerio10 held in Copenhagen in 2022 (with 7,200 participants) was affected by the Covid pandemic, first in postponing the event by a year and then in a fall in numbers as international travelling had yet to recover. But the expectation is that Vienna will match or exceed the levels of Amsterdam.
Sculean: If you look at the number of abstracts submitted (around 1,700!)—which is a good guide to attendance levels—it’s similar to Amsterdam and about 25 per cent more than Copenhagen. If you look at the number of abstracts submitted from different parts of the world, we have a high number coming from the USA, as well as from China and the Asia-Pacific area. And that’s quite important because we didn’t have many participants from that part of the world at the last EuroPerio. So, this indicates that we should have a high number of participants coming from Asia.
And the EFP now has 14 international associate members, with some new ones appointed at the last general assembly, and this will definitely increase the outreach of the meeting.
Shapira: In terms of speakers and moderators, at EuroPerio11 42 percent will be women, which is a record. At the last EuroPerio, in Copenhagen, the total was 26 percent.
Sculean: It is important to add here that, with the live surgery, we will have two female surgeons. This is the first time at a EuroPerio that female surgeons have featured.
Elena Figuero: For all EFP events, strategies are implemented that prioritize inclusion, establishing clear objectives for balanced representation between gender and diversity. In the beginning, female speakers at EuroPerio were marginal, with values close to 12% EuroPerio 2 (Florence, 1997), EuroPerio 5 (Madrid, 2006), and EuroPerio 6 (Stockholm, 2009), and without women being part of the organizing Ccmmittee. The key moment was 2018, at EuroPerio 9 (Amsterdam), when, for the first time a woman participated as chair of the organizing committee (Michèle Reners) and a clear strategy was initiated to increase female representation among EuroPerio speakers. Thanks to this, at EuroPerio11 there will be 42% female speakers, marking significant progress towards equal representation.
In terms of congress attendance, we do not have clear participation data for the first EuroPerio congresses, but since 2015 women’s attendance at congresses has stabilized at around 50%, even reaching a 55% female presence in 2015 (EuroPerio 8). At the most recent congress, EuroPerio 10 (Copenhagen, 2022), women represented 47% of the total attendees.
Shapira. We expect the youthful demographic profile observed in Copenhagen (where two-thirds of participants were under 45 and one third under 35) to be replicated, if not enhanced, in Vienna. EuroPerio has always been a hub for young professionals eager to advance their careers and stay at the forefront of periodontology and implant dentistry developments. This strong representation of younger participants highlights the event’s appeal as a platform for cutting-edge science, innovation, and skill development, which resonates with early-career clinicians and researchers. EuroPerio 11 allows young professionals to meet in person with master clinicians as well as with their peers.
