Overview

Lifestyle choices significantly affect oral health. Poor diet, lack of exercise, inadequate oral hygiene, stress and insufficient sleep contribute to gum disease and other health problems, while adopting healthier lifestyles can lead to improved oral and overall health.

Oral health professionals play a vital role in educating patients about the importance of gum health, and effective motivation strategies are essential in actively engaging and helping their patients achieve and maintain a healthy smile.

Some recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean interdentally and use a mouth rinse.
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle, including a healthy diet, regular exercise, no tobacco, managing stress and getting enough quality sleep.
  • Get a medical check-up (especially to measure glucose levels and check blood pressure) and visit your dentist regularly.
