Oral Health Throughout Life overview
Maintaining oral health throughout life is essential for health, overall well-being and an optimal quality of life.
Oral health is a key component of general health and of psychosocial well-being. The mouth is not an isolated system. It is a gateway for microorganisms to enter the body. Oral health is related to 57 Systemic diseases, the most prominent being diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It is well-established that oral health needs change throughout different stages of life, with each period presenting its own unique challenges, risk factors, and opportunities for prevention.
Maintaining an adequate level of oral hygiene is essential because it impacts oral health which in turn significantly affects many areas of daily life.
A healthy mouth allows us to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow, and express emotions comfortably and confidently, without pain or discomfort. Conversely, poor oral health, can also impact many areas of life in a negative way, including our relationships and self esteem and overall well-being, causing pain, infections, and even social withdrawal. Thus, oral health is a cornerstone of a fulfilling healthy life.
As we move through the different stages of life, our oral health needs and risks change, requiring tailored approaches to oral hygiene, diet, and preventive care.
Each life stage, from infancy to older age, require specific approaches to oral hygiene, dietary considerations, and preventive care to ensure that our teeth, gums, and mouth remain healthy over our lifetime.
